As an Elementary Principal I am approached on a regular basis by organizations and individuals that want to come in and offer educational “opportunities” to my students. Whether it is before, during, or after school, it’s my responsibility to ensure that these enrichment activities are worthwhile for my students. When a fellow principal told me how rewarding Open Door Theatre’s drama program had been for his school, I jumped at the opportunity to bring the experience to Longfellow.I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen an activity make such a powerful impact on my students as our involvement in Open Door Theatre’s Jungle Book Production did. The director, Vashti Summervill, was phenomenal! She took over 60 kids, grades K-6, and taught them how to not only perform individually, but work as a group toward a common purpose. My students loved every moment they spent working on the production, and the feedback from my parents has been 100% positive. Everyone involved wants to know when we can do it again!
Vashti is a true treasure to this community and one of the most inspirational and talented people I have ever had the pleasure to work with. If you have the opportunity to bring her into your school to work with your kids, take it. Your kids and families will thank you for it and be begging for more!
